CIVIL SOCIETY NGOS CALL FOR APOLOGY FROM UTUSAN MALAYSIA AND AUTHOR OF ARTICLE PDF Print E-mail

PRESS STATEMENT

CIVIL SOCIETY NGOS CALL FOR APOLOGY

FROM UTUSAN MALAYSIA AND AUTHOR OF ARTICLE

21 October, 2008 (Tuesday)

Please click here for BM version.

We, the following civil society organizations, are deeply concerned over the short story written by Chamil Wariya in Mingguan Malaysia entitled Politik baru YB J  which involves a Member of Parliament, YB Josephine. The storyline is dangerously similar to recent events in the Malaysian political scenario involving a particular Member of Parliament. The shocking ending of the story with the assassination of the MP and subsequent suicide of the murderer encourages extreme acts of violence.

Such type of journalism is recklessly irresponsible and only serves to incite and inflame emotions, given the current political scene. The story mischievously encourages the use of senseless violence which must be condemned by everyone.

We are aghast that Utusan Malaysia allowed the publication of such a story. It is even more shocking that the author of the story is the CEO of the Malaysian Press Institute.

We demand that Utusan Malaysia and the author apologise to the public and the article be retracted. Utusan Malaysia must be more responsible and professional. To make amends, the author could do community service at the particular YB's service centre.
