JAG Congratulates Dr. Wan Azizah
The Joint Action Group for Gender Equality (JAG) would like to express our heartiest congratulations to YAB Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail for her appointment as the country’s Deputy Prime Minister, following her win in the recent 14th General Elections.
Her appointment was announced by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday and notably makes Dr Wan Azizah the first woman Deputy Prime Minister in our country.
Given the manifesto presented by Pakatan Harapan during the election campaign and the government’s commitment for greater social inclusivity, we look forward to hearing her vision for women in politics and participation in crucial decision-making roles.
We hope that Dr Wan Azizah and other women ministers will bring special attention to the lived realities of women and the obstacles that they face on a daily basis in order to gain access to justice. There can no longer be excuses for sexual and gender based violence and discrimination. Our shared goal should be for zero tolerance for these forms of human rights violations, both offline and online.
JAG looks forward to greater engagement and collaboration between the government and with women’s rights NGOs, Orang Asli women, Orang Asal women from Sabah and Sarawak, women from vulnerable and marginalised communities – including women workers in the informal, manufacturing, estate, agricultural, cottage and SME sectors – towards creating a liveable Malaysia for all, based on the principles of gender equality and non-discrimination.
Given that the recent historic elections featured a majority of women voters, this appointment is truly an inspiration for women and girls in our country who aspire to be in important leadership positions. Dr Wan Azizah not only embodies a peaceful yet strong determination for her convictions, but also the perseverance of a woman’s struggle for equal recognition and validation.
JAG wishes Dr Wan Azizah all the best in this leadership role which we truly believe will be one which celebrates and appreciates the contribution of women in our great country.
